Best Enchantments in Minecraft for Every Tool, Weapon & Armor
The best enchantments in Minecraft for every piece of gear — swords, armor, pickaxes, bows, tridents, the mace and more — plus how to get them.

The best enchantments in Minecraft are Mending and Unbreaking III on everything, then Sharpness V for swords, Protection IV for armor, Efficiency V + Fortune III for pickaxes and Power V + Infinity (or Mending) for bows. Get Mending from librarian villagers or treasure loot — it never appears on the enchanting table.

Good enchantments are the difference between gear that breaks every hour and gear that lasts forever. This guide lists the best enchantments in Minecraft for every tool, weapon and armor piece, explains what each one does and how to stack them without wasting XP.

- Best sword
- Sharpness V
- Best armor

- Efficiency V + Fortune III
- Mending source
- Villagers, chests, fishing
- Combine books
- Anvil
The two enchantments every item needs
Mending repairs your item using XP orbs you collect, and Unbreaking III makes it lose durability much more slowly. Together they make gear practically permanent. Mending is a treasure enchantment, so it never shows up on the enchanting table — get it from a librarian villager, chest loot or fishing.
Best sword enchantments
| Enchantment | Max | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sharpness | V | Extra damage to every mob. |
| Looting | III | More mob drops. |
| Sweeping Edge | III | Stronger sweep attacks (Java). |
| Fire Aspect | II | Sets targets on fire; cooks food drops. |
| Mending + Unbreaking | I / III | Durability. |
Sharpness can’t be combined with Smite or Bane of Arthropods. Sharpness is the best all-rounder; Smite is only better if you fight mostly undead mobs.
Best armor enchantments
- 🛡️ Protection IV on every piece — it reduces almost all damage.
- 🥾 Boots: Feather Falling IV and Depth Strider III (or Frost Walker), plus Soul Speed for the Nether.
- 🪖 Helmet: Respiration III and Aqua Affinity for underwater work.
- 👖 Leggings: Swift Sneak III if you explore the deep dark.
- 🔁 Mending and Unbreaking III on all four pieces.
Only one protection type can go on each piece, so pick Protection over Fire, Blast or Projectile Protection unless you have a special job in mind.
Best pickaxe enchantments
Efficiency V for speed, plus either Fortune III (more diamonds, coal, lapis and redstone) or Silk Touch (collect blocks like glass and ores as they are). They conflict, so most players keep two pickaxes. Fortune III can turn one diamond ore into as many as four diamonds — see our best Y level for diamonds guide.
Best axe, shovel and hoe enchantments
Efficiency V, Unbreaking III and Mending are the core for all three. Add Fortune III to a hoe for more crops and saplings from leaves, or Silk Touch to a shovel to collect grass blocks and mycelium.
Best bow and crossbow enchantments
| Item | Best enchantments |
|---|---|
| 🏹 Bow | Power V, Punch II, Flame, Infinity or Mending, Unbreaking III |
| 🎯 Crossbow | Quick Charge III, Multishot or Piercing IV, Mending, Unbreaking III |
Infinity and Mending conflict on bows. Infinity is great early on; Mending is better long-term if you carry plenty of arrows.
Best trident enchantments
For an underwater weapon: Impaling V (Java: extra damage to sea creatures), Loyalty III so it returns, and Mending + Unbreaking. For travel in the rain: Riptide III launches you through the air — but Riptide can’t be combined with Loyalty or Channeling.
Best mace enchantments
The mace from trial chambers has its own enchantments. Density adds damage based on how far you fall, Breach ignores some of the target’s armor and Wind Burst launches you back into the air after a hit. Density and Breach conflict, so choose Density for big smash attacks or Breach against armored enemies.
Best fishing rod enchantments
Luck of the Sea III and Lure III give better and faster catches — and fishing is one of the ways to get Mending books. Add Unbreaking III and Mending.
How to get the best enchantments
- 📚 Enchanting table with 15 bookshelves. This unlocks level 30 enchantments. Place the bookshelves one block away from the table.
- 🧑🌾 Librarian villagers. They sell enchanted books, including Mending. Break and replace their lectern to reroll trades until you find the book you want.
- 🔨 Anvil. Combine books with gear, or two books of the same level to get the next level (two Sharpness IV books make Sharpness V).
- 🎣 Fishing and chests. Both can give treasure books like Mending.
Best enchantments in Minecraft for beginners: priority order
If you’re just starting with enchanting, follow this order to get the most value from your XP:
- ⛏️ Efficiency on your pickaxe — everything gets faster.
- 🛡️ Protection on your chestplate and leggings — the biggest armor pieces.
- ⚔️ Sharpness on your sword.
- 🔁 Unbreaking on your most-used tools.
- 📚 Mending from a librarian villager — then move it to everything.
- 💎 Fortune III before you mine your diamonds.
How the enchanting table works
An enchanting table costs 2 diamonds, 4 obsidian and a book. It offers three choices that cost 1, 2 or 3 lapis lazuli plus XP levels. To unlock level 30 enchantments, place 15 bookshelves around the table with a one-block gap between table and shelves. Nothing (not even a torch or carpet) can be in the gap, or the shelf won’t count.
Max levels of the most popular enchantments
| Enchantment | Max level | Goes on |
|---|---|---|
| Sharpness | V | Swords, axes |
| Protection | IV | All armor |
| Efficiency | V | Tools |
| Fortune | III | Pickaxes, axes, shovels, hoes |
| Unbreaking | III | Almost everything |
| Feather Falling | IV | Boots |
| Power | V | Bows |
| Looting | III | Swords |
| Mending | I | Almost everything |
Villager trading for enchanted books
Turn an unemployed villager into a librarian by placing a lectern next to them. Check their trades: if they don’t offer the book you want, break the lectern and place it again (before you trade with them) to reroll. Once you find a good trade like Mending, lock it in by trading once. Curing a zombie villager also gives you big discounts with that villager.
Enchantments that conflict
Some enchantments can’t go on the same item. Remember these pairs before spending XP:
- ⚔️ Sharpness ✖ Smite ✖ Bane of Arthropods
- 🛡️ Protection ✖ Fire Protection ✖ Blast Protection ✖ Projectile Protection
- ⛏️ Fortune ✖ Silk Touch
- 🏹 Infinity ✖ Mending (bows)
- 🔱 Riptide ✖ Loyalty and Channeling
- 🎯 Multishot ✖ Piercing (crossbows)
- 🔨 Density ✖ Breach (mace)
- 🥾 Depth Strider ✖ Frost Walker
Using a grindstone and anvil wisely
A grindstone removes enchantments (except curses) and gives back a little XP — useful for cleaning up junk enchanted items from fishing or mobs. An anvil combines and repairs. Because every anvil use raises the item’s repair cost, put the most important enchantments on first and avoid repairing with the anvil once you have Mending. With good planning, one sword or pickaxe can carry you for the rest of your world.
One last tip: don’t throw away enchanted books you can’t use yet. Store them in a chest near your anvil. As your XP grows, you can combine two books of the same level into a stronger one, and books you find later — from fishing, chests or trades — often complete the perfect set for a tool you already own.
Curses to avoid
Curse of Binding stops you removing armor, and Curse of Vanishing deletes the item when you die. Check books from chests and fishing before applying them. A grindstone can remove normal enchantments but not curses.
