Best Y Level for Diamonds in Minecraft (and How to Find Them Fast)

The best Y level for diamonds in Minecraft today, why it works, and the fastest ways to mine diamonds — branch mining, caves, lava lakes and Fortune III.

QUICK ANSWER

The best Y level for diamonds in Minecraft is Y -58 to -59. Diamonds generate from Y 16 down to the bottom of the world and get more common the deeper you go, peaking just above bedrock. Mine at Y -58 so you stay clear of the bedrock layers and lava at the very bottom.

If you want diamonds fast, the single most important thing is where you dig. Since the Caves & Cliffs update, the best Y level for diamonds in Minecraft is deep underground — around Y -58 and Y -59. This guide explains why, how to check your Y level, and the mining methods that find the most diamonds per minute.

Why Y -58 is the best Y level for diamonds

Diamond ore can appear anywhere from Y 16 down to Y -63, but it isn’t spread evenly. The game places more diamond ore the deeper you go, so the lowest layers have the most. The Minecraft Wiki lists Y -58 and Y -59 as the levels where deepslate diamond ore is most common.

You might think the very bottom (Y -63 or -64) would be even better, but those layers are mixed with bedrock, which you can’t mine, and they are full of lava pools. Y -58 sits just above that messy zone, so your tunnels stay clean and safe.

How to check your Y level

  • 💻 Java Edition: press F3 and read the “XYZ” line. The middle number is Y.
  • 📱 Bedrock Edition: turn on Show Coordinates in the world settings. The middle number is Y.

Dig down in a staircase pattern (never straight down) until the middle number reads -58.

What you need before you go

  • ⛏️ An iron pickaxe or better — stone and gold pickaxes break deepslate diamond ore without dropping anything.
  • 🔥 Torches, food and a bucket of water (to turn lava into obsidian or cobblestone).
  • 🪣 Spare pickaxes — deepslate is slower to mine than stone and wears tools out.
  • ✨ Ideally an Efficiency pickaxe for speed and a Fortune pickaxe for the ores themselves.

The best ways to find diamonds

1. Branch mining (most reliable)

At Y -58, dig one long main tunnel. Every few blocks, dig side tunnels straight out to the left and right. Leave two or three blocks of stone between side tunnels so you can see every block without mining it twice. This is slow but steady, and it finds diamonds in every world.

2. Explore caves and aquifers

Big caves expose a lot of blocks at once, which is great — with one catch. Diamond ore that would touch air has a high chance of not generating at all. That’s why open cave walls often look empty. The good news: ore next to water or lava isn’t affected, so the walls of underground lakes and lava pools are excellent places to look.

3. Lava lakes at the bottom

Large lava lakes near Y -54 to -60 light up the walls around them. Place blocks to make a safe path, or pour water to turn the surface into obsidian, then look along the edges for the pale blue specks of diamond ore.

4. Chests in structures

Diamonds also appear in chests in places like villages (blacksmith), shipwrecks, buried treasure, desert and jungle temples, and ancient cities. It’s not as reliable as mining, but it’s a nice bonus while you explore.

Get more diamonds with Fortune III

Mining diamond ore normally gives one diamond. With a Fortune III pickaxe, each ore can drop up to 4 diamonds, averaging about 2.2 per ore. That’s more than double. Save your diamond ores until you have Fortune III — you can mine around them or use a Silk Touch pickaxe to collect the ore block itself and break it later with Fortune.

Staying safe at Y -58

  • 🔥 Lava: never dig the block under your feet. Carry a water bucket at all times.
  • 👂 The Warden: deep dark areas with sculk blocks can summon the Warden. If you see lots of black-and-teal sculk, leave or sneak quietly.
  • 💡 Light up tunnels: place torches regularly to stop mobs spawning behind you.
  • 🛏️ Set a spawn point: sleep in a bed near your mine so a death doesn’t send you far away.

What to make with diamonds

Your first diamonds should usually become a diamond pickaxe (3 diamonds) — it mines obsidian, which you need for a Nether portal and an enchanting table (2 diamonds). After that, go for armor and a sword, then upgrade them to netherite later. Browse every recipe that uses diamonds on our diamond item page.

How many diamonds do you need?

Before you head down, it helps to know your shopping list:

ItemDiamonds
Pickaxe3
Sword2
Axe3
Shovel1
Hoe2
Helmet5
Chestplate8
Leggings7
Boots4
Enchanting table2
Jukebox1

A full set of diamond armor costs 24 diamonds, and a full set of tools (pickaxe, sword, axe, shovel) costs 9. If you plan to upgrade to netherite later, the diamond gear is used up in the smithing table, so don’t waste diamonds on decorative blocks too early.

Mining speed: make every trip count

Deepslate takes about twice as long to mine as normal stone. Speed it up with:

  • ⚡ Efficiency V on your pickaxe.
  • 🧪 Haste from a beacon — see our beacon guide.
  • 🫧 Staying out of water — mining underwater is much slower without Aqua Affinity.

Myths about finding diamonds

  • ❌ “Some biomes have more diamonds.” Diamond ore is spread the same way in all Overworld biomes. Height matters, not biome.
  • ❌ “Y 11 is best.” That was true before the Caves & Cliffs update. In today’s versions, it’s far too high.
  • ❌ “Caves are always best.” Caves expose lots of blocks, but ore next to air often doesn’t generate. Branch mining is more consistent.

Quick checklist before mining

Iron pickaxe or better ✔ · Spare pickaxes ✔ · Torches ✔ · Water bucket ✔ · Food ✔ · Bed nearby ✔ · Y -58 ✔. Tick them all and you’re ready for a productive trip.

Why diamonds feel rare

Even at the best Y level, diamonds are uncommon, and that’s on purpose — they are the key to the best gear before netherite. Expect to find a vein every few minutes of steady branch mining, with veins usually holding a handful of ores. Patience pays off: a single good session at Y -58 with Fortune III can give you enough diamonds for a full set of tools and armor.

Does it work in Bedrock Edition?

Yes. Java and Bedrock use the same ore heights since the Caves & Cliffs update, so Y -58 to -59 is the sweet spot on Bedrock (consoles, mobile, Windows) too. Only the way you see your coordinates is different.
