What Rockstar did with past games
Rockstar has a clear habit: consoles first, PC later. Here is how long PC players waited for its last three big games:
| Game | Console release | PC release | PC wait |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA 4 | April 2008 | December 2008 | ~8 months |
| GTA 5 | September 17, 2013 | April 14, 2015 | ~19 months |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 26, 2018 | November 5, 2019 | ~12 months |
When could the GTA 6 PC version come out?
If GTA 6 follows the same pattern, a PC version would land sometime in late 2027 or 2028. That is our estimate from history, not an announcement.
Why does Rockstar release on PC later?
Rockstar has never given one official reason, but the usual explanations from developers across the industry make sense here:
- 🖥️ Thousands of PC setups. Consoles are two fixed pieces of hardware. PCs come in endless combinations of graphics cards and processors, which takes far longer to test.
- 🛡️ Online protection. Online modes on PC need extra work against cheaters.
- ✨ A better version. Rockstar’s PC releases tend to arrive with extras. GTA 5 on PC launched with 4K support, frame rates above 60 FPS and the Rockstar Editor video tool.
So while waiting is annoying, PC players historically get the most polished version of Rockstar’s games.
What Take-Two has said
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said in interviews that Rockstar's usual approach is to launch on consoles first and bring games to PC afterwards. He has not committed to a date for GTA 6 on PC.
